According to AutoCar magazine, BMW is in discussions with other car manufacturers, including rivals such as Mercedes-Benz, to provide them with engines.
The most likely candidate is their newly developed V-12 which is based on a the company's 4.0L turbocharged V8. This engine will be put under the hood of the new 7-series due to be released next year, and in the new Rolls-Royce "baby" Phantom. This engine might also make it into the Mercedes S-class and future Maybach models. BMW is also in negotiations with othe manufacturers who might use their clean diesel engine.

According to MotorAuthority BMW is contemplating a 1-series based roadster, the Z2 to slot in below the BMW Z4.
The roadster could could see production by 2012 and would probably be powered by various 4-cylinder engines, starting with a 120-hp entry model up to a 211-hp turbocharged unit. It is unlikely the Z2 would come over to North America as it would be in direct competition with the BMW 1-series, which over here is available with a 300-hp turbocharged V6. Also, BMW has already learned with the original Z3 that North American consumers don't like premium priced cars with 4-bangers. Further down the road, however, as BMW produces more high-performance inline-4s and the environmental cause increases, there may be room for the Z2 in the North American market.

Even the famed Bavarian Motor Works company is feeling the pinch from increased fuel prices. Demand for their big V8s has taken a nosedive in recent months and this has the upper executives questioning the future of the big 8s.
Right now, according to BMW, they can produce enough V8s to meet demand using just one shift working for 4 days a week. And don't think that their beautiful inline 6s will fill the void, BMW has also began ramping down production of those engines. Expect BMW to start manufacturing more 4-cylinder engines ... perhaps up-to 560,000 units per year.

BMW is recalling 200,000 vehicles because the passenger side airbag may not deploy in the event of a crash.
The problem stems from possible damage to the seat sensor that determines whether the passenger seat is occupied. This could lead to the sensor not registering that there is a passenger and thereby not deploying the passenger side airbag. The recall will begin in September and applies to the 2006 3-series and 2006 6-series with the standard seat. Also the '04-'05 Z4, The '04-'06 5-series, the '06 X5 and the '04-'06 7-series that have the 'comfort' seat.
